Drainage in Brough
Brough is an ancient settlement on the north bank of the Humber, west of Hessle, with a history stretching back to the Roman town of Petuaria. Far from being a modern creation, it grew up where the well-drained chalk of the Yorkshire Wolds meets the low-lying ground along the estuary, and its drainage reflects that setting. For much of the twentieth century the town was dominated by its aircraft works, and the housing built to serve that industry sits alongside older cottages and, more recently, extensive new commuter estates.
The estuary edge is the defining drainage influence. Brough Haven, a small haven on the Humber, and the low ground along the waterfront sit close to the level of high tides, so the water table here is high and outfalls to the estuary can be tide-locked at high water. Properties on the lower ground towards the Haven and the former aircraft works are more exposed to surface water backing up when a high tide coincides with heavy rain. Yorkshire Water manages the sewerage network, while the Environment Agency oversees tidal flood risk on the Humber.
Rising north from the estuary, the ground becomes chalkier as it climbs towards Elloughton, Welton and the Wolds. Watercourses such as Welton Beck carry water down from the hills, and the villages of Elloughton-cum-Brough contain older cottages and period houses on ageing clay drainage. Here the challenges are more typical of the Wolds foot: root intrusion from mature gardens, joint failure in salt-glazed clay, and the springs and becks of the spring line keeping the ground damp.
The twentieth-century housing associated with the aircraft works, together with more recent large-scale estate development around the town, has added a great deal of clay, pitch-fibre and modern plastic drainage. The newest estates are laid to current standards, but the sheer pace of house-building around Brough has increased hard surfacing and surface water flows, and new connections into the existing network can create local capacity pressures during storms.
Understanding Brough means recognising both faces of the town: the tidal, high-water-table ground along the estuary, and the chalkier, spring-fed slopes rising towards the Wolds. Drainage behaviour changes markedly between the two.
